Surrender of Indian Passport / Renunciation of Indian Citizenship

The Indian Citizenship Act, 1955, does not allow dual citizenship. Holding Indian Passport / acquiring Indian Passport / travelling on Indian passport after acquisition of foreign citizenship constitutes an offence under the Indian Passport Act, 1967, and attracts penalties.

Under the Indian law, Persons of Indian Origin who have acquired foreign nationality are required to surrender their Indian passports to the nearest Indian Mission/Post immediately after acquisition of foreign citizenship.  A grace period of three months after acquisition of foreign nationality (to be counted from the date of registration / Naturalization Certificate and not from the date of foreign passport) has been allowed for using Indian passport for travel. 

Retention of Indian Passport for more than 3 years, reissue of Passport and obtaining Miscellaneous service on Passports after obtaining foreign nationality as well as travel after grace period attract penalties.

To surrender Indian Passport, 

  • Applicants are required to fill online application form at https://embassy.passportindia.gov.in and carry a printout of the filled in application form.
  • Three recent passport-size photographs of 2 inch x 2 inch with white background. 
  • Passport in original, including those previous Indian passports valid at the time of acquisition of foreign nationality if any, and photocopies of pages first two, last two and pages containing valid visa and other observations.
  • Valid foreign passport, along with previous foreign passports if any, and photocopies of pages first two, last two and pages containing valid visa and other observations.
  • Certificate of Registration/Naturalisation of foreign nationality and its copy.
  • Declaration Form prescribed u/s 8 of the Citizenship Act, duly attested by the Embassy of India, Riyadh.  An Indian citizen with valid passport and Iqama (copies to be submitted) to sign the 2nd part of the Declaration Form.
  • Personal appearance of applicant is compulsory to establish personal identity.
  • Payment of penalty, if any, to be checked by the Embassy in terms of existing relevant instructions.


The Indian passport will be cancelled and returned alongwith Surrender Certificate.
